7 Tips to Save Money on Wedding Photography

  1. It doesn’t hurt to negotiate. The photographers’ out-of-pocket expenses are likely a lot lower than what they charge. See what is included with their packages and what features you actually want.
  2. Ask if you can wait to pay for the proofs and albums until after the wedding. This will give you a little bit more time to save up money or you can use some of your gift money to pay for it.
  3. Save money by having the photographer to only stay for part of the reception. Schedule the cake cutting, toasts, bouquet toss, and first dance, soon after dinner so you don’t have to pay for the extra time.
  4. Ask friends and family if they know any photographers that work part time as a wedding photographer. If the photographer has other sources of income, they might be willing to charge less or you might be able to get a discount as a referral.
  5. Many photographers have other photographers working for them. Ask how much it would be to have one of their photographers work with you and if their rates are lower.
  6. Save money by only printing your favorite images. Ask your photographer how much it will cost to keep the proofs if you want to print everything down the road.
  7. If you’re really on a tight budget, you can hire an amateur photographer/videographer and see if a professional will edit it for you later on. It will likely be a fraction of the cost it would be to hire them to shoot the wedding themselves, since they are only doing one part of the process.
